Class 8 English Ggrammar- Change of Pronouns in Indirect Speech

Rules for the Change of Pronouns in Indirect Speech:


1.First person pronouns in the direct speech change according to the subject of the reporting verb in the indirect speech.
Direct: He said,‘I am very busy now.’
Indirect: He said that he was very busy then.
Direct: She said, ‘I am very much tired.’
Indirect: She said that she was very much tired.

2.Second person pronouns in the direct speech change according to the object of the reporting verb in the indirect speech.

Direct: Rakesh said to me, ‘You have to come with me.’
Indirect: Rakesh told me that I had to go with him.
Direct: Shilpa said to me, ‘You may go.’
Indirect: Shilpa told me that I might go.
Direct: Rani said to Raj, ‘You can go.’
Indirect: Rani told Raj that he could go.

3.Third person pronouns in the direct speech will not change in the indirect speech.

Direct: Pratap said, ‘She is a clever girl.’
Indirect: Pratap said that she was a clever girl.
Direct: Kavita said, ‘They have invited us.’
Indirect: kavita said that they had invited them.
Direct: They said, ‘He does not come regularly to the office.’
Indirect: They said that he did not come regularly to the office.
