Food variety
What is food?
Anything which we eat for the energy needed to live is called food.
Why food is necessary for us?
Food is the substance eaten by us, to be able to work, to grow and maintain our body and remain healthy.
No living thing can survive without food. So, food is very precious.
We eat many different kinds of food, at different times and on different days. This is called variety in food.
Food variety means eating a wide variety of foods (a balanced diet) from among and across each of the five food groups, in the amounts recommended.
The five major food groups are:
(i) Fruits
(ii) Vegetables, legumes
(iii) Lean meat, fish, poultry, eggs, nuts, legumes
(iv) Bread, cereals, rice, pasta, noodles
(v) Milk, yoghurt, cheese.
Eating many different foods helps maintain a healthy, well-balanced and interesting diet that provides adequate nutrition to our bodies. Different people eat different types of food according to their habits, life style, taste and availability.
For example some people eat mainly food prepared from wheat (eg. chapatti, bread or noodles), pulses (dal), vegetables and fruits.
